The camera is equipped with an image sensor called SPAD (single Photon Avalanche Diode) that can recognize faint light even when nothing is visible to the naked eye. It is expected to be used for monitoring, etc.

The SPAD sensor uses a technique called photon counting, which multiplies each photon entering the sensor by a large electrical signal so that it can detect an object even in dim light.

It is reported that the camera will be equipped with a SPAD sensor developed by Canon in 2021 and will have 3.2 megapixels, which will determine the resolution of the image by more than three times as many pixels. According to Canon, this is the world's first camera with SPAD sensors.

The camera can capture clear images of distant objects in the dark, but the traditional CMOS sensor can not clearly capture these images due to the increase of noise. For example, even in a dark night without stars, the type of ship can be identified a few kilometers away. The price of the camera has not been disclosed, and it is reported that it will be sold to government agencies for monitoring such as port security, with the goal of launching it within 2023.
