Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
According to CTOnews.com on April 12, wind and solar power generation reached an all-time high in 2022, accounting for 12% of global electricity generation, an increase of 2 percentage points over 2021. This is the main finding of the Global electricity Review report released by the energy think tank Ember. The report analyzes power data for 2022 in 78 countries, which account for 93% of global electricity demand. According to Ember, it provides first-hand information and in-depth analysis of the global power transformation in 2022.
The report also has good news: it predicts that wind and solar energy will push the world into a new era by 2023, with fossil fuel power generation declining, thereby reducing emissions from the power sector. "in this decade that determines the fate of the climate, this is the beginning of the end of the fossil age," said Ma gorzata Wiatros-Motyka, lead author of the report. "We are entering the era of clean energy."
According to CTOnews.com, solar energy is the fastest growing source of electricity for 18 years in a row, growing by 24% year-on-year in 2022, an increase of 245 TWh, equivalent to the total electricity consumption of South Africa. Wind power generation also increased by 17%, an increase of 312 TWh, almost enough to meet Britain's electricity demand. More than 60 countries generate more than 10% of their electricity from wind and solar energy, according to the report. The report counts all clean power sources, including nuclear power, which account for 39% of the world's electricity, a new record.
"Ember's analysis captures a key turning point in the global power system," said Kingsmill Bond, an energy strategist at RMI, the Rocky Mountain Institute. "the rapid growth in wind and solar energy, led by China, means that fossil fuel demand has peaked and all future growth will come from renewable energy. Investors should adjust their capital allocation to this new environment."
But despite these advances, coal remains the world's largest source of electricity, accounting for 36 per cent of global electricity in 2022.
The growth in wind and solar power generation in 2022 met 80% of the growth in global electricity demand. Despite the global natural gas crisis and concerns about the return of coal, it is the growth of wind and solar energy that limits the increase in coal power generation (+ 1.1%, or + 108 TWh). Natural gas power generation declined slightly in 2022 (- 0.2%, or-12 TWh). But this still means that emissions from the power sector increased by 1.3% in 2022, the highest level in history. However, the report predicts that 2022 is likely to be the "peak" of power emissions and the last year of growth in fossil fuel power generation, and that clean power will meet all growth demand after 2023. As a result, fossil fuel power generation will decline slightly this year (- 0.3%), and will decline even more in the next few years as the deployment of wind and solar energy accelerates.
To achieve economy-wide carbon neutrality by 2050, the power sector needs to change from the highest emissions sector to the first to achieve net zero emissions, and achieve this goal by 2040, according to the International Energy Agency. This means that wind and solar energy will account for 41% of global electricity by 2030, compared with 12% in 2022.
"Wind and solar energy are ready to rise rapidly," says Ma solar gorzata Wiatros-Motyka. Clean electricity will reshape the global economy in everything from transport to industry. Entering the era of clean energy means that the phase-out of coal power generation will occur, and the end of the growth of natural gas power generation is just around the corner. It's changing so fast. But it all depends on the actions now taken by governments, businesses and citizens to make the world clean electricity by 2040. "
