CTOnews.com April 12, Apple AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max headset users need to connect to iPhone, iPad or Mac devices if they want to update their firmware.

For those who don't have an Apple device, the update method either relies on devices such as a friend's iPhone, or can only use the old version.

Apple officially offers additional solutions in its latest update log, with CTOnews.com translating as follows: "if you don't have an Apple device available nearby, you can now make an appointment to update the firmware at the Apple Store retail store or with an authorized Apple service provider."

Update: today Apple released firmware 5E133 for AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Max, but then withdrew it.
