As the maintenance organization of openEuler system on RISC-V architecture, openEuler RISC-V SIG is mainly committed to the adaptation of openEuler in RISC-V hardware and software, and has been providing the RISC-V image version of openEuler according to the rhythm of openEuler version. This update brings better hardware support and more software adaptations, including default support for VisionFive 2, SG2042 and other new development boards, new adaptations for UKUI,GNOME and other desktop environments, adaptations for containers and tools, as well as new JIT support and targeted optimization by default.
In terms of hardware, openEuler RISC-V 23.03 inherits and updates the development boards such as Quanzhina D1, Silicon Speed Lichee RV,SiFive Unmatched, Sai Fang VisionFive 1, and updates and supports Sai Fang VisionFive 2 and Calculus SG2042.
Support for SG2042
The successful access of openEuler RISC-V 23.03 innovative version to RISC-V 64 cores high performance processor SG2042 (EVB) server board is an important step in the ecological development of RISC-V server field. After testing, the basic system, wired network, USB interface and other components can be used smoothly. The software supports kernel upgrade
OpenEuler 23.03 uses the Linux Kernel 6.1kernel to explore the technology ahead of time for the future long life cycle version of openEuler using the 6.x kernel. RISC-V SIG follows this important update and provides the adaptation of the 6.1kernel to the openEuler RISC-V environment, which is convenient for RISC-V developers to use the latest kernel.
Support for multiple desktop environments
On the desktop side, openEuler RISC-V 23.03 innovative version supports XFCE, UKUI, DDE, Kiran, GNOME, Cinnamon desktop environment, providing users with an excellent desktop user experience. RISC-V SIG also makes targeted optimizations for some desktop components such as GNOME's gjs.
Adapting to iSulad container
RISC-V SIG added RISC-V support for iSulad and successfully tested the availability of the iSulad container engine in the innovative version of openEuler RISC-V 23.03. ISulad is a container engine project of the Open Atomic Open Source Foundation, initiated by Huawei Poincare Laboratories and opened up in the openEuler community in 2019.
Compared with Docker,iSulad general container engine, it is a new container solution, which provides a unified architecture design to meet the different needs of CT and IT areas. It is implemented by C / C++, and has the characteristics of light, smart, smart and fast, not limited by hardware specifications and architecture, less noise overhead, and can be used in a wide range of fields.
Experimental JIT support
In the innovative version of openEuler RISC-V 23.03, RISC-V SIG adds targeted JIT optimization and testing, related work involves Mesa, GNOME desktop optimization, and LuaJIT related software.
Currently, RISCV SIG upgrades Mesa to version 23.0.0, introduces a new LLVMpipe-based JIT engine that supports RISC-V optimization, and runs glxgears tests in the RISC-V environment, confirming that performance has been significantly improved. Developers are adding Cache optimization on the basis of the patch, and we will continue to follow up on the follow-up progress.
On the desktop side, RISC-V SIG has backported SpiderMonkey RISC-V 's JIT patch on mozjs102 to significantly improve gjs performance and further optimize the GNOME desktop experience.
Based on the experimental addition of LuaJIT support, RISC-V SIG has successfully built a series of LuaJIT-dependent software packages for RISC-V architecture, including openResty and Minetest, and the related support is still under development.
