In January, it was announced that Tata Group was about to take over a large Wistron iPhone factory in southern India, a deal that would make it India's first homegrown iPhone maker. Business Line has revealed that Wistron will complete the sale of its iPhone manufacturing plant in India to Tata Group by the end of April.
In fact, Wistron is one of Apple's largest suppliers in India, with a factory in Karnataka in southern India where it began assembling iPhones in 2017. Currently, tata electronics, a division of tata group, is already supplying parts to apple.
CTOnews.com learned from the official, Tata Group () is India's largest group company, including 7 departments 96 companies, operating in more than 40 countries on six continents, its products exported to 140 countries, involving aviation, automotive, fast-moving products, chemicals, defense aerospace, power distribution systems, engineering, finance, medical, information, railway locomotives, real estate, steel, communications and other fields.
According to public sources, Tata Group is named after its founder Jamhidji Tata, whose family members have almost always served as chairman of the group. The chairman of the group during the transition period is Ratan Tata.
Wistron is one of the assemblers of Apple's iPhone SE and iPhone 6s smartphones. Later, Lixun Precision announced that it would acquire part of Wistron iPhone business for US $472 million, thus becoming Apple's first mainland contract manufacturer.
Tata has been in talks with Wistron for months and hopes to complete the acquisition by the end of March, people familiar with the matter said. If successful, Tata would take over all eight iPhone production lines at Wistron's India plant and its 10,000 workers, including thousands of engineers. Wistron will continue to serve as a service partner for iPhone in India.
Now, foreign media reports say that Tata Group will complete the acquisition of Wistron's iPhone factory in India by the end of April. Sources said the Tata group had begun organizational changes at the plant.
Sources said the plant could lay off about 2,000 workers as part of the deal process. In addition, the plant is likely to shed 400 middle managers, while about four to five senior managers have been fired or are leaving the plant.
It is speculated that after the acquisition of Tata Group, the Indian conglomerate may produce iPhone 15 for Apple. Currently, eight production lines at Wistron's India plant are producing iPhone 12 and iPhone 14.
Of course, after Tata takes over the Bangalore plant, Wistron will completely withdraw from the Indian market because it is the only factory in India that produces Apple products.
