April 7, local time, US retail giant Wal-Mart announced on Thursday that it plans to set up fast charging stations for electric vehicles in all Wal-Mart stores and Sam's Club stores in the United States. and plans to achieve full coverage of electric vehicle fast charging stations in stores across the United States by 2030.

Wal-Mart has joined Volkswagen's Electrify America project, one of the largest open bus charging networks in the United States. So far, Wal-Mart has deployed nearly 1300 fast charging stations across the United States.

Wal-Mart has more than 5000 brand stores and Sam's Club stores in the United States. According to statistics, about 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of these stores.

Vishal Kapadia, Wal-Mart's recently appointed senior vice-president for energy transformation, said in an interview: "We have the ability to solve the problem of electric vehicle mileage and charging anxiety that no other company in the US can match."

At present, the charging infrastructure of electric vehicles in the United States is developing rapidly, but people are generally worried about the running time, performance, convenience and high cost of charging piles.

Mr Kapadia said Wal-Mart chose to build its own charging stations rather than working with other operators, which would help solve reliability and cost problems.

Kapadia expects that the new charging station will install DC fast charging piles, with an average of about four charging posts per store.

Wal-Mart declined to comment on financial details and said it was looking for relevant suppliers.

At present, there are about 30,000 quick-filling piles in the United States, which can recharge electric vehicles in an hour or less. Some of the high-power quick-filling piles even sell for more than $100000.

Although there are still not many electric cars on the roads in the United States, that is changing with persistently high oil prices, increased subsidies for electric vehicles and the launch of new electric vehicles at lower prices.

AutoForecast Solutions, a market consultancy, predicts that electric vehicles will account for about 1/3 of the North American market by 2029.

The president of the United States has promised to build a network of 500,000 public charging stations by 2030. In February, the White House unveiled new rules on federal subsidies totaling $7.5 billion (currently about 51.6 billion yuan) aimed at promoting the development of the electric vehicle industry and infrastructure, including the construction of charging stations along US highways.

Mr Kapadia said Wal-Mart would soon start the charging station project and consider applying for federal subsidy funds later.

According to statistics, about 240 million consumers visit Wal-Mart stores every week. The new charging stations will also provide Wal-Mart with more data on how shoppers pay or stay in specific stores.
