At the same time, however, OpenAI is also facing more and more fierce competition. The good news for OpenAI is that the company has basically become synonymous with the current explosion of generative artificial intelligence. The company's ChatGPT shot to fame overnight and became the gold standard for artificial intelligence chatbots, forcing larger competitors such as Google to catch up. OpenAI then continued to maintain this momentum by quickly optimizing ChatGPT to make it smarter and introducing it into more scenarios by signing partnerships with companies such as Microsoft.

The bad news, meanwhile, is that its success may prove to be a double-edged sword. OpenAI's first-mover advantage is rapidly waning because of privacy rules, regulations and fierce market competition, the company is unlikely to dominate the field forever, and competitors such as Google and Baidu will also have huge opportunities.

At the heart of the problem is that ChatGPT itself is a so-called "universal chat robot platform" designed to help a wide range of users across as many industries and lifestyles as possible. Experts and industry insiders believe that in the real world, only through further deepening, building artificial intelligence models suitable for specific purposes, and meeting the strict requirements of international privacy protection and data security, will it bring real help to the industry.

"I don't think there will be a master model of artificial intelligence that everyone can use, and I don't want to work with such a model," said Naveen Rao, co-founder of MosaicML, an artificial intelligence company.

So while OpenAI is recognized as a pioneer in the industry, its path to becoming the next great tech giant is not clear.

OpenAI's determination to dominate the field means it needs a more generic artificial intelligence model and allows other companies to add their own parts to it. As a result, OpenAI licensed ChatGPT to other organizations, allowing startups and big brands, such as partners and investors, Microsoft, to build on ChatGPT's products.

However, this approach also leaves a market opportunity for more professional artificial intelligence models. Many companies are targeting sensitive industries.

Mr Rao says healthcare and financial services companies hope that powerful artificial intelligence models will help them, but also want to ensure that their data is kept in their own hands and that only industry-related information is used to train artificial intelligence models.

The artificial intelligence industry is not a winner-take-all expert believes that competition in the artificial intelligence industry will bring more choices and stimulate better innovation.

"the diversity of generative AI models means that companies can build and deploy applications that are consistent with their specific business needs and private data," says Kari Briski, vice-president of Nvidia's industrial intelligence software. "as far as large language models are concerned, a single model cannot adapt to all scenarios."

Brisky said that customized development based on specific needs can enhance the value of large language models to enterprises, while artificial intelligence cannot take an one-size-fits-all approach if it is to be further developed.

OpenAI has first introduced its artificial intelligence to the wider public, but the company's business model so far means that other companies still need to pay for the technology and serve corporate customers that OpenAI cannot serve on its own.
