▲ Global smartphone wholesale revenue by price range TechInsights Wireless Smartphone Strategy (WSS) service forecast that global smartphone wholesale revenue will increase by 4% year-on-year to $419 billion in 2023 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 2.88 trillion yuan), mainly due to the increase in average selling price (up 4% year-on-year to $349, CTOnews.com Note: currently about 2401 yuan). However, wholesale smartphone prices are expected to decline slightly in 2024 / 2025 before resuming growth pattern in 2026, driven by expected foldable iPhone models. Then, before the 6G cycle arrives, the average selling price will move toward a depressed track again from 2027. The combination of higher-priced 5G iPhone supercycles and volatile component costs has pushed up the global average wholesale selling price of smartphones for nearly two years. These factors will gradually disappear from 2024 and cause fluctuations in the average selling price curve in the coming years.

The high-end smartphone segment ($300 and above, CTOnews.com Note: currently around CNY 2064 and above) is expected to reach 73%-74% value share during the forecast window; as we expect, by 2022, it has surpassed the mid-market to become the largest price range for shipments. This trend will continue until 2028.

The report predicts that the trend of smartphone shipments and price polarization will continue. During the forecast window, higher price ranges outperform not only the overall market in terms of shipments, but also lower price ranges in terms of average selling price performance.

Smartphones will remain a high-base subcategory for the next five years, but growth will slow steadily. In terms of revenue, the largest regions will be Asia Pacific, North America and Western Europe. The region with the highest average selling price will be North America. From 2022 to 2028, the high-end price range will remain the price range with the largest shipments. At the same time, the high-end price range will create the world's largest shipment and revenue pool.
