Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com April 6, Samsung Electronics and AMD announced today that they have extended their strategic intellectual property license agreement, and Samsung Electronics will continue to obtain AMD's Radeon graphics IP license.

"Samsung has revolutionized mobile graphics with AMD, including our recent partnership to introduce ray tracing to mobile processors for the first time in the industry," said Seogjun Lee, executive vice president of development for Samsung Electronics Application processor (AP). With our expertise in designing ultra-low power solutions, we will continue to drive continuous innovation in mobile graphics. "

As early as 2019, the two sides signed the first agreement to allow AMD to license its custom graphics IP based on RDNA graphics architecture to Samsung for smartphones and other mobile devices. Since then, Samsung has been using AMD Radeon graphics solutions for Exynos processors on its Galaxy smartphones.

The advantages of this partnership are obvious. Samsung can take advantage of AMD to take the lead in bringing the desktop GPU experience to mobile platforms, including ray tracing.

As previously reported by CTOnews.com, in early 2022, Samsung announced the launch of a new high-end mobile processor Exynos 2200 with a Samsung Xclipse graphics processing unit (GPU) based on AMD RDNA 2 architecture.

Based on the high-performance AMD RDNA 2 architecture, Xclipse inherits advanced graphics features such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS) that were previously available only on PC, laptops, and game consoles.

However, after the launch, the performance of this processor is not very good, only carried in some Galaxy S22 series phones, but also lost to Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 in the performance test, and was exposed to low production yield, low efficiency, frequency reduction due to fever, and so on.

According to South Korean media EK, Samsung Electronics is also stepping up research and development of Exynos 2400, which is aimed at carrying the Galaxy S24 series to be released next year. The industry expects Exynos 2400 to start mass production as early as November. We can look forward to whether there will be a breakthrough in the cooperation between Samsung and AMD.
