CTOnews.com April 6 news, Apple in the iPhone 14 / Pro series of mobile phones introduced a car accident detection function, which is designed to automatically contact emergency services when a collision is detected.

Crash detection is available on both Apple iPhone 14 / Pro models and the latest Apple Watch. The feature uses sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes to detect serious crashes and automatically call emergency services if the user doesn't respond to an alert within 20 seconds.

The feature does save lives in emergency situations, but there are also complaints that it can be accidentally triggered during skiing, rides and other non-emergency activities.

Apple has optimized collision detection in recent iOS 16 updates to reduce false positives. CTOnews.com found that in a recently updated crash detection support document, Apple also changed its advice to users when making an accidental call to not hang up and instead explain to emergency responders that no help is needed.

Apple also removed from the support documentation a suggestion that users cancel calls during the 20-second timer-"If you don't need to contact emergency services, click Cancel and confirm you don't need emergency services."

That said, Apple wants users who mistakenly dial emergency calls to get through and say they don't need help, rather than hanging up.
