CTOnews.com, April 5 (Xinhua)-- Sweden-based Volvo Motor Co., Ltd. said on Wednesday that it sold 63132 vehicles worldwide in March, an increase of 8% over the same period last year, mainly due to a 140% surge in sales of pure electric vehicles.

Car sales in the first three months of 2023 were 162938, up 10 per cent from the same period last year. Sales growth was mainly driven by the company's pure electric vehicles, up 157% from the same period in 2022. Volvo's sales in China reached 36457 in the first quarter of this year, up 2 per cent from a year earlier.

Volvo's new energy models, which use pure electric or plug-in hybrid systems, are said to be popular in the first three months of this year, accounting for 41% of Volvo's global sales. During this period, its share of pure electric vehicles eventually reached 18%.

Volvo's sales in Europe rose 12 per cent year-on-year to 72671 in the first three months of 2023, with new energy models accounting for 62 per cent of overall sales in the region, according to Volvo's website. In the first three months of this year, u.s. sales rose 16% to 26483 vehicles, with new energy models accounting for 29% of total sales in the first quarter.

In March, Volvo XC40 had the highest sales, with 20556 vehicles (17584 in 2022), followed by XC60, with a total of 18090 (16855 in 2022) and 9828 XC90 (9141 in 2022).
