Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

On the morning of April 4, Beijing time, it is reported that more than 1000 business leaders have jointly called for slowing down the development of ChatGPT, a newer and more powerful large language model. But the open letter raised questions about the sincerity of the signers, and people even suspected that many of them did not agree with the principles set out in the letter.

Many people in the industry do believe that a powerful artificial intelligence like ChatGPT will do some harm to society, but suspending development for six months seems to be wishful thinking with little realistic basis.

High-speed trains developed by generative artificial intelligence have never stopped since OpenAI began testing the GPT-3 in November last year. The moment OpenAI released ChatGPT and started the arms race of artificial intelligence, OpenAI opened the Magic Box of Pandora. Driven by market forces, even if OpenAI wants to stop the development of artificial intelligence, it can't do it at all.

As individuals and companies are accustomed to turning to ChatGPT, Google Bard and Microsoft New Bing for answers to questions, demand is strong enough to force tech giants to dominate this promising field.

"generative artificial intelligence creates things that we can't understand temporarily or even forever, so we really should take some time to understand these systems." "but we can't do that," said Giuseppe Sette, president of startup Toggle AI. "the field is so hot that everything from tech giants to the Chinese market is full of competition."

At least since November last year, generative artificial intelligence has been a hot topic in the technology industry. OpenAI seized the opportunity to expand its partnership with Microsoft by introducing ChatGPT to the Bing search engine in January. Over the next few months, it launched a newer and more powerful version of ChatGPT, GPT-4. Soon, the company opened the platform again, introducing plug-ins from companies such as Slack, Instacart and Klarna.

In order to cope with the competition, Google soon launched the Bard big language model. Subsequently, China's Alibaba and Baidu also announced that they would develop products to compete with ChatGPT.

In addition, there are many image generation programs on the market, some of which are also developed by OpenAI, and some are stand-alone programs like Stable Diffusion and DALL-E. They set off an AI storm in the art and fashion industries.

In their open letter, business leaders called for a moratorium on the development of new artificial intelligence models, but did not elaborate on what should be done with an existing model such as GPT-4.

Other developers think this is unfair: suspending development for six months will only affect fledgling companies, while companies like OpenAI can take the opportunity to continue to expand their lead. Other startups argue that while business leaders are right to call for a slowdown in the development of generative artificial intelligence, they are reluctant to slow down.

This is inevitable when a technology becomes popular and hype rises one after another. Generative artificial intelligence has emerged, and people have experienced the power of large language models. Unlike other short-lived technological innovations, there is indeed a huge market demand for this technology.

There are also many obstacles to the implementation of willing but inadequate implementation.

"everyone is scrambling for share in the free market, who would want to suspend development?" "the box has been opened and can't be stopped," said Jai Das, president and co-founder of venture capital firm VC Sapphire.

Das says there is no way to stop companies from secretly developing large language models or technology giants from developing artificial intelligence technology. No organization will inspect every company one by one during these six months to find out if they are developing algorithm-related code.

The open letter argues that society as a whole needs some time to better understand the impact of artificial intelligence. What should we do if this idea is widely supported and slowing down development is not possible?

This is not an impossible task, but it does need to rely on a way that is relatively rare in cutting-edge technology: setting standards through a wide range of industry agreements.

"it's impossible to pause anything. It's impossible." "Why not let the whole industry start a dialogue and figure out how to avoid the problems mentioned in the open letter?" Das said. "

Will technology companies sit down and set standards? This remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: we may want artificial intelligence to slow down and wait for us, but it is already ahead of us.

Can we stop it on earth? There is no answer yet.
