CTOnews.com, April 4 (Xinhua)-- Apple plans to lay off a small number of employees responsible for development and maintenance on its retail team, Bloomberg reported. These employees are mainly responsible for the construction and maintenance of Apple's retail stores worldwide.

It is not clear how many jobs Apple will cut, but Bloomberg said the layoffs are "likely to be very small." However, this is the first time that Apple has cut its internal staff as a result of spending cuts. In June 2022, the company laid off about 100 contract workers responsible for hiring, but the contractors were not full-time employees. Apple has also laid off some engineers and security guards who work on contracts.

Apple told employees that these are not layoffs, but streamlining, aimed at improving store maintenance around the world. Laid-off employees can reapply for positions similar to their previous jobs, and may receive compensation equivalent to up to four months' salary if they do not find a new role.

In November, Apple suspended hiring for most jobs other than research and development, and in March, it expanded the hiring freeze. For many teams, Apple has stopped hiring and positions are left when employees leave. The hiring slowdown has allowed Apple to avoid the widespread layoffs announced by other technology companies in recent months.

According to CTOnews.com, Twitter has laid off thousands of employees after it was acquired by Elon Musk, and last month, Facebook announced plans to lay off about 10, 000 employees. Microsoft laid off its artificial intelligence ethics team in March, following several layoffs. Google's parent company, Alphabet, laid off 12000 employees in January.
