CTOnews.com, April 4 (Xinhua)-- Google has cut support for laptops, office equipment and other services to save costs, and non-engineers are now assigned Chromebook by default instead of the previous MacBook. Google has also introduced a virtual workstation system called CloudTop, which has become the "default desktop" choice. In addition, Google has reduced the supply of other office supplies, such as staples and tape.

Google is "suspending updates to laptops, desktops and monitors" and is also "changing the frequency of device replacement", CNBC reported today. Employees who are not engineers will now get a Chromebook by default, while the MacBook used to be "within the scope of availability".

Google's other spending cuts include:

Adjust the opening hours of fitness classes, massage services, shuttle schedules and cafes to adapt to the mixed work mode

Improve the utilization of servers and data centers and optimize the computational efficiency of machine learning

Improve external procurement processes and reduce the cost of software, equipment and professional services

Maintain a low pace of recruitment, control travel and entertainment expenses, and simplify internal processes and tools

Google issued the following statement to CNBC: "as we publicly stated, we have a company goal of achieving lasting savings through increased speed and efficiency. As part of this, we are making some practical changes to help us maintain responsible management of resources while continuing to provide industry-leading benefits, allowances and facilities."

These measures are part of Google's "multi-year savings" plan to deal with the economic crisis. According to CTOnews.com, Google announced 12000 layoffs at the beginning of this year, the largest layoff in its history. Ruth Porat, Google's chief financial officer, mentioned 2008, when Google made similar cuts. In addition to layoffs, Google has also cancelled some employee benefits, such as free food.
