Beijing, April 3 (Xinhua) the New York Times, Washington Post and Los Angeles Times all said that they would not buy Twitter's Twitter Blue authentication service for their official Twitter accounts or journalists' accounts, because the certification is no longer as authoritative and professional as it used to be.

Musk began to remove long-used authentication tags on Twitter on Saturday. So far, the gold authentication mark on the official account of the New York Times has been removed. Elon Musk, Twitter's boss, said in a deleted tweet that the company would give unpaid authentication accounts a "grace period" of several weeks and that they would not remove the authentication mark until they made it clear that they would not pay. The New York Times has previously said it will not pay $1000 a month to keep the gold mark, nor will it pay its employees to keep the blue mark.

"We do not intend to pay monthly for the authentication status of our official Twitter account," said a spokesman for the New York Times. "nor will we reimburse personal accounts to journalists who use Twitter Blue, unless in rare cases such authentication status is critical to reporting."

The New York Times has lost its golden certification mark and the Washington Post also said it "will not pay for Twitter Blue services as an agency or as a journalist on our behalf" because "it is clear that certification marks no longer represent authority and expertise." Sara Yassin, executive editor of the Los Angeles Times, wrote in an internal memo that the company does not plan to pay employees for Twitter Blue subscriptions for the time being, noting that Twitter is "not as reliable as it used to be" and that certification "no longer establishes authority or credibility." At present, the official Twitter account of the Los Angeles Times still retains the golden authentication mark.

In addition, BBC does not pay for personal authentication services for journalists. The leaders of several media organizations, such as The Verge, Huffington Post and BuzzFeed News, have also told employees that they will not subsidize their personal subscription services.
