The Italian data protection agency said there were privacy issues with the model, which was created by US start-up OpenAI and supported by Microsoft.

The Italian data protection agency said the ban and investigation into OpenAI was "effective immediately" on March 31. OpenAI told the BBC BBC that the company complied with Italian privacy laws and had taken ChatGPT offline in Italy.

People have been worried about the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI), including its threat to work and the spread of misinformation and biases. Earlier this week, people in the tech community, including Elon Musk, called for a moratorium on the development of more advanced AI systems. The Italian data protection agency said Italy would not only block OpenAI's chatbot, but also investigate whether it complies with general data protection regulations.

On March 23, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, publicly admitted that there was an error in the open source library, which led to the disclosure of some users' chat records with ChatGPT.

Italian regulators said that because it was unable to verify the age of users, ChatGPT also exposed minors to "absolutely inappropriate answers compared to their level of development and awareness".
