This is the first time that the gaming industry's summer event has returned to offline activities since 2019, but it had to be suspended because Nintendo, Microsoft, Ubisoft, Tencent and other game companies all said they would not participate.

According to CTOnews.com, the original date of E3 2023 is June 13 to 16, some of which are open to people in the industry and some days are open to the public. But before June, there were some worrying signs that the return of E3 might run into difficulties.

According to an email sent to employees confirmed by IGN, the E3 2023 "does not receive enough continuous attention to proceed in a way that demonstrates the size, strength and influence of our industry."

Kyle Marsden-Kish, global vice president of games at ReedPop, wrote in an email to The Verge:

This is a difficult decision because we and our partners have made a lot of efforts to make this event a success, but we have to do what is good for the industry and E3. We thank and understand that interested companies are not ready to play demos and that resource challenges make it impossible for them to overcome the obstacles to participating in E3 this summer. For those companies that have promised to participate in E3 2023, we regret that we are unable to provide you with the ReedPop experience you deserve and look forward to.

Marsden-Kish said at the end of the email that ReedPop and ESA will continue to work together to host future E3 events, suggesting that the show may restart in the next few years.

In January, IGN reported that Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony would not attend the show, and Nintendo and Microsoft later confirmed this. In an earnings call in February, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot hinted that E3 might not be held at all, but ReedPop confirmed to The Verge that the event was still under way. Ubisoft later said it would attend the exhibition, but then backed out. IGN also reported in March that Sega and Tencent would not participate in E3 either.

Nevertheless, there are still a lot of games in June. Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest will be held on June 8, and live Play Days will be restored this year. Microsoft's annual Xbox presentation and Starfield-focused presentation are scheduled for June 11. Ubisoft's live Ubisoft Forward Live is scheduled for the next day, June 12.
