Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, March 30, according to The Elec, Samsung shows that it is developing 13.3-inch OLED panels for future MacBook Air models and plans to gradually convert Apple's product lines into OLED.
In addition to Macbook, LG display is also developing OLED screens for the new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro, but does not have enough capacity to produce OLED panels for MacBook Air, which led Apple to choose Samsung.
It is said that Samsung also plans to develop 11-inch OLED panels for next year's iPad, suggesting that Samsung may grab some 11-inch "iPad Pro" orders from the LG display.
According to the products currently under development, Apple is preparing to launch new OLED models such as iPad Pro, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
The Elec is not sure when the OLED MacBook Air will be released, and they think it may take about two years. Ross Young, a display industry analyst, has previously said he expects a "MacBook Air" with OLED panels to be launched in 2024.
It is said that Apple originally hoped that Samsung would provide the iPad Air with a 10.86in OLED panel, which would have been its first OLED iPad, but Apple eventually cancelled the project because of the cost and capacity problems of the single-layer OLED, as well as the need to consider the differentiation between the iPad Air and the iPad Pro. It is said that Apple has now moved to a more reliable double-layer OLED panel, which is expected to debut on "iPad Pro" next year.
The report pointed out that Samsung's project to develop 13.3in OLED panels for MacBook Air is actually a test for the large-scale production of future MacBook Pro models of OLED panels.
As CTOnews.com previously reported, Guo also said Samsung plans to significantly increase OLED panel shipments of laptops in 2023, with a goal of increasing YoY (year-on-year) to 6-7 million units by 2023.
Guo Mingyi explained why Apple chose MacBook Air over MacBook Pro. "laptops that use OLED have the advantage of being thinner and lighter than mini-LED, and offer a wider variety of shape design options," he says.
Frivolity is far more important to MacBook Air than to MacBook Pro. This allows Apple to focus on upgrading MacBook Air's display technology before choosing to upgrade MacBook Pro.
