March 30 news, according to foreign media reports, on Wednesday, South Korean chip foundry East Hi-Tech (DB HiTek) confirmed that it plans to provide 12-inch wafer foundry services.

Eastern Hi-Tech CEO Choi Chang-shik said that as part of the plan, the company would need to invest 2.5 trillion won (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 13.225 billion yuan) to ensure the production capacity of 20,000 12-inch wafers per month.

Eastern Hi-Tech was founded in 1997 and currently its main source of income is the 8-inch contract manufacturing business, which manufactures display driver chips and power management chips for related manufacturers.

Although the company is far less well-known than TSMC and Samsung Electronics in chip contract manufacturing, it is also the second largest chip contract manufacturer in South Korea after Samsung Electronics.

Earlier this month, the company said it planned to spin off its fab-free chip business to better focus on its main chip foundry business.

In addition, it has been revealed that Eastern Hi-Tech will begin to provide 40nm OLED DDI display chips for smartphones to Samsung display from the second half of this year, the first time the company has provided OLED DDI for smartphones to Samsung display.
