Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens OC_Formula and Doudou for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com March 30 news, Nippon Telegraph and telephone company NTT recently announced that it has successfully developed an Active Multi-access SIM card (active multi-access SIM card). In case of failure, a physical card can actively switch between the networks of the two operators to improve reliability.

According to the official announcement, the technology allows multiple carriers to be used with a single SIM card and automatically switch to another carrier with a SIM card if one carrier fails. This SIM card is mainly used for data communication of the Internet of things.

The SIM card has a built-in check program to monitor whether the communication is executed correctly by periodically checking the communication with the host on the Internet. If a communication failure of the primary carrier is detected under certain conditions, the system will automatically switch to the standby carrier. In addition, after a period of time, it will automatically switch back to the main carrier. Therefore, even if users use SIM cards for a large number of general-purpose terminals, there is no need to manually switch operators one by one.

CTOnews.com learned from the announcement that NTT plans to provide a trial service for the Internet of things use of this SIM card from June 2023.
