March 30 news, the AIGC craze set off by ChatGPT has exploded all over the world, and almost every industry is reflecting on how to use it. However, for fear of over-reliance on OpenAI, which first introduced the technology, some software developers are looking for alternative technologies.

With the increasing popularity of AIGC, it is expected that the AI market will grow several times in the next few years, and the market size is expected to reach 90 billion US dollars by 2025. But OpenAI may not be the only participant who can enjoy the big cake alone.

According to foreign media reports, wary of relying on a single company, a desire to acquire mission-specific models and a willingness to cut costs, more than a dozen startups and investors say they are turning to competitors from industry leader OpenAI, casting a shadow over Microsoft and OpenAI's ambitions to dominate this emerging field.

AI investor George Matthew (George Mathew) compares the basic AI model to other technological breakthroughs that give rise to competition. "do we only have one Internet service provider? of course not, so we will also need multiple AI basic model providers to build an ecosystem that works healthier," Matthew said. "OpenAI is only a step ahead, but it will not be our only option."

AI storytelling startup Tome helps users build slides faster. Its system was originally built on GPT-3, the basic AI model first released by OpenAI in 2020. Tome said it had reached 3 million users this month and began experimenting with other AI models.

Tome has introduced the text model of OpenAI competitor Anthropic and plans to move from OpenAI's photo generation model Dall-E to the open source model Stable Diffusion developed by Stability AI. Keith Peiris, chief executive of Tome, said: "our goal is to find the best model for each task, with the least delay and the best quality."

AI software developers and investors say it has become a new consensus in the industry to reduce reliance on a single model in order to provide more reliable services, control costs, and make use of the specialized knowledge of different models.

ChatGPT has become a household name after many people were shocked by the chat robot OpenAI's ability to answer complex questions with clarity, grammatical correctness and the appearance of a human being. It has attracted more than $10 billion in investment from Microsoft, while arch-rivals including Google and other smaller companies are scrambling to create new AI models.

By any measure, OpenAI's new GPT-4 model is still the most powerful. The AIGC market is expected to grow to $98.1 billion by 2026, according to estimates released by PitchBook, a global data research firm.

As the infrastructure layer of AI application, the basic model attracts the most investment from venture capitalists and strategic investors. For companies like OpenAI, how to use these basic models is critical. OpenAI has said it hopes to generate $1 billion in revenue by 2024, which it expects to reach $200m this year.

As a way to make money, OpenAI charges $0.060 for 1000 token prompts in the latest GPT-4 model and introduces a ChatGPT subscription service that charges users $20 a month.

Startups are also concerned that Microsoft may compete with its AI customers as the tech giant integrates OpenAI models into products ranging from search to office suites.

"many of these products may use sensitive corporate data and the underlying model will see how these companies interact with their customers," said Mike Volpi, an Index Ventures partner who supports OpenAI competitor Cohere. Many of these companies will feel uncomfortable relying on Microsoft or a company that is usually controlled by Microsoft. "

OpenAI and Microsoft declined to comment.

Dave Logan Moser, chief executive of Jasper, an AI copy generation platform, admits that Jasper.ai, the company's writing assistant, was originally built on the OpenAI model, but did not want to rely on a single model. To that end, Jasper has added Cohere and Anthropic, two other large language model companies that have partnered with Google in cloud computing, and is launching its own AI engine to help marketers customize sound by using hybrid models.

Matt Shumer, chief executive of HyperWite, another AI copy generation app, says the app matches each user's actions to different models based on a variety of considerations. For example, it uses OpenAI's model to generate long articles and uses the Coherence model to automatically complete sentences at a faster and lower cost.

Others are looking for alternatives only because OpenAI is struggling to keep up with growing demand. "OpenAI's server crashed," says Srinath Sridhar, chief executive of Regie.ai, a writing assistant for the sales team. "We want users to have a better experience, and using multiple models will help us process queries at a lower cost."

To be sure, many startups, including customer service software company Intercom, are still betting all on OpenAI. Fergal Reid, the company's director of machine learning, admits that using OpenAI's GPT-4 is "very expensive". But he added: "We now believe that we need to use GPT-4 to get the accuracy needed to provide the best service to our customers."
