CTOnews.com CNBC reported on March 30 that Google is restructuring the reporting organization of its virtual assistant division to focus more on the company's new artificial intelligence chat technology Bard.

In a memo to employees on Wednesday titled "Changes to the Assistant and Bard teams," Sissie Hsiao, Google vice president and head of Google's Assistant business unit, announced the changes to the organization, showing that the department takes Bard seriously.

Jianchang "JC" Mao, vice president of engineering for Google Assistant who reports directly to Hsiao, will leave the company for personal reasons, the memo said. Mao"helped shape the Assistant we have today," Hsiao wrote in the memo.

Mao's replacement will be Peeyush Ranjan, who has been at Google for 16 years and most recently served as vice president of Google's business organization, responsible for payments.

"As the Bard team continues this work, we want to make sure we continue to support and execute future opportunities," Hsiao said in the email. This year, more than ever, we are focused on delivering impactful delivery to our users. "

CTOnews.com understands that Google Assistant is an AI-based virtual assistant software application and language processing software, similar to Apple's Siri or Amazon's Alexa. It is often used in the form of speech recognition on mobile and home devices, including its Pixel smartphone and Nest smart slightly and devices. It is also used in smartwatches, smart displays, TVs and in vehicles via the Android Auto platform.

The new leadership changes suggest that the virtual assistant division may plan to integrate Bard technology into similar products in the future.

Last week, Google launched its ChatGPT competitor Bard to the public and called it "an experiment," starting with tests in the U.S. and U.K.

In Wednesday's change, Google Assistant VP of Engineering Amar Subramanya will oversee engineering for Bard's team, while Trevor Strohman, who previously oversaw Bard's engineering efforts, will continue to serve as Bard's "regional head of technology," reporting to Hsiao.

However, how this technology is used to generate revenue remains a big question. Executives have hinted at it as a search product, but Bard leaders have recently tried to downplay that use case to employees.
