Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

On the evening of March 29, Beijing time, it was reported that Google's Android antitrust case won a partial victory in India today after an appeals court reversed some of the rectification orders issued by India's antitrust regulators.

Last October, the Competition Commission (CCI), India's antitrust regulator, announced a $160 million fine on Google for abusing its Android ecosystem. In addition to fines, CCI also asked Google to adjust its business model and proposed 10 corrective measures.

Today, an appeals court in India rejected four of the 10 corrective measures. The appellate court said that CCI's ruling on Google's anti-competitive behavior was correct and that Google was responsible for paying the fine. At the same time, however, the appellate court found that four of the 10 corrective measures required by the CCI were unreasonable and were rescinded.

For Google, this relieves its pressure to some extent. Today, Google will not need to host a third-party app store in its Play Store App Store, as CCI previously required.

In January, India's Supreme Court rejected Google's appeal in the case and asked the appeals court to learn about the case by March 31. At the same time, the Supreme Court gave Google a week's grace period to comply with the antitrust ruling of the appellate court.

Google has been worried about India's CCI ruling because, with the EU's 2018 ruling, India's CCI imposed more comprehensive and thorough restrictions on Google. Google says no other jurisdiction has asked the company to make such far-reaching changes. Google believes that as a result of this decision, the growth of its Android ecosystem in India will stagnate.

As early as July 2018, the European Commission announced an antitrust fine of 4.3 billion euros on Google. The reason is that Google has used its dominant market position to impose some illegal restrictions on Android equipment manufacturers and mobile operators.

In addition to the Android antitrust fine, India's CCI imposed an additional 9.36 billion rupees ($113 million) on Google in October for abusing its dominant position in the app store market to promote its own payment system. Similarly, Google has filed an appeal.
