While the pace of global capacity expansion in 12-inch wafers is slowing, the industry is still focused on increasing capacity to meet long-term strong demand for semiconductors, said CEO Ajit Manocha, president of the International Semiconductor Industry Association.

According to the International Semiconductor Industry Association, from 2022 to 2026, chip manufacturers, including Gro Fonder, Infineon, Intel, Xia Xia, Meguiar, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, SMIC, Texas Instruments, TSMC, etc., are expected to increase the production capacity of 12-inch fab plants, and 82 new factories or production lines planned by these companies will be put into operation between 2023 and 2026.

According to the International Semiconductor Industry Association, domestic 12-inch wafer factories will account for about 1/4 of the global production capacity focused on mature processes, and the monthly capacity is expected to reach 2.4 million wafers. The share of global production capacity is expected to increase from 22% last year to 25% in 2026.

Due to weak demand for memory chips, the global share of Korean 12-inch fab capacity is expected to fall from 25 per cent last year to 23 per cent in 2026.

Driven by automotive chips and large-scale investment, capacity shares in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East are all expected to increase. The American market, which accounted for only 0.2 per cent last year, is expected to grow to nearly 9 per cent in 2026. Europe and the Middle East are expected to increase their share from 6 per cent to 7 per cent. The share of capacity of 12-inch fabs in south-east Asia is expected to remain unchanged from 2022 to 2026, at 4 per cent.
