Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Windelight for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com March 29, Nokia announced that it will launch a 4G network on the moon by the end of 2023. The technology is expected to pave the way for more lunar discoveries and create opportunities for human presence on the moon and elsewhere.
Nokia Chief engineer Luis Maestro Ruiz De Temino said at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona that the Finnish telecommunications group plans to use the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to bring the 4G network to the moon in the coming months.
According to Tu Yuan Pixabay, the network will lay the foundation for NASA's Artemis manned space mission, which will be powered by a base station equipped with antennas, which will be deployed with the Nova-C lunar lander with the help of the IM-2 mission to be carried out by American space company Intuitive Machines. According to public information, the mission is scheduled to be launched in November.
Of course, NASA's current plan is to land two astronauts on the lunar surface in 2025, which marks the return of humans to the moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, and we don't expect the 4G network to be enabled until then.
According to CNBC, Intuitive Machines's Nova-C lunar lander will bring the system and other payloads to the moon, eventually deploying Nokia's 4G communications system to Shackleton crater in the southern part of the moon, when a LTE wireless network connection will be established between the lander and the mobile base station.
Nokia said the technology is designed to withstand extreme conditions in space and is designed to show that the ground network can meet the communication needs of future space missions. Nokia added that its network would allow astronauts to communicate with each other, communicate with mission control centers, remotely control lunar rovers and live broadcasts, and transmit telemetry data and real-time video back to Earth.
Anshel Sag, chief analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, said 2023 was an "optimistic target" for Nokia to launch a 4G network, adding: "if the hardware is ready and verified, as long as the partner they choose does not experience any setbacks or delays, it is likely to launch a 4G network in 2023."
Nokia was selected by NASA to participate in the project in 2020, and its Bell Labs received $14.1 million (CTOnews.com Note: about 97.008 million yuan) for the project, according to CNN.
Nokia said in a blog post that it would first test the lander's short-range and long-range communication capabilities, ranging from a few hundred meters to two to three kilometers. Nokia said in a blog post that the network was essential for "the future continued human presence on the moon and Mars".
