Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Windelight for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, March 29 (Xinhua)-- Google has reached a partnership with online IDE developer Replit to integrate Replit's AI-based code recommendation tool into its cloud platform in an attempt to challenge Microsoft's GitHub Copilot.

According to CTOnews.com, GitHub Copilot is a programming tool driven by OpenAI's Codex language model, which can provide code suggestions based on comments and functions entered by programmers, just like a super auto-completion function.

Now Google wants to be a part of it. Under its agreement with Replit, Google will give the startup access to its huge computing resources and customized AI models. In return, Google will host and provide Replit code editing software from the Google cloud.

Specifically, Replit developers will gain access to Google's cloud infrastructure, services and basic models through Ghostwriter--Replit 's software development AI, while Google Cloud and Workspace developers will get access to Replit's collaborative code editing platform.

Replit's Ghostwriter code generator integrates directly into the company's browser-based online IDE, which automatically completes the code and responds to natural language queries. Amjad Masad, CEO of Replit, believes that this helps programmers improve productivity and makes it easier for people to fix bugs and collaborate with colleagues.

Replit says it supports more than 20 million developers and claims its Ghostwriter robot helps generate more than 30 per cent of users' code. Meanwhile, Microsoft is planning to upgrade its GitHub Copilot model to GPT-4.

AI programming tools have improved over time, and in addition to code completion, they can now generate code based on instructions in natural language text. However, these tools are not perfect, and even if they can help people with less programming experience to write code, developers still need to have sufficient technical knowledge to determine whether their output is correct.
