CTOnews.com New data from Recurrent Auto shows that used battery life in electric vehicles far exceeds critics and consumers 'expectations. This data breaks many people's misconceptions and concerns about electric car batteries.

Recurrent Auto surveyed more than 15,000 electric vehicle owners and collected the most detailed battery health data ever, showing that electric vehicle batteries last much longer than expected. Only 1.5% of this large group of owners have replaced batteries without a recall or warranty expiration, most of them older Nissan Leaf models that lack a liquid-cooled battery temperature system.

Recurrent Auto's survey covers 13 models, including Tesla Model S, Model 3 and Model Y; Chevrolet Bolt, Bolt EUV and Volt; Hyundai Kona; BMW i3; Audi e-tron; Nissan Leaf; Hyundai Kona and IONIQ 5; and Ford Mustang Mach-E, CTOnews.com understands.

In addition to a handful of owners forced to replace batteries, Recurrent Auto also found that battery decay is not linear. From each survey group, while EV range peaked between 10,000 and 20,000 miles, the batteries declined rapidly as the range approached 100,000 miles and then leveled off.

Recurrent Auto attributes this phenomenon to two main technologies: battery management systems and battery temperature control systems, both of which greatly improve battery life. These systems not only allow the owner to limit the amount of charge the battery can take, thereby reducing damage to battery health, but also ensure that the battery is always operating at safe and "healthy" temperatures.

Perhaps the most promising target for Recurrent Auto data is the used electric vehicle market, which many consider a risky one. But Recurrent Auto's data shows that people don't have to worry about the battery health of the used electric car they want to buy.
