CTOnews.com, March 28 (Xinhua)-- US electric car company Lucid Motors recently announced a recall of 637 flagship Lucid Air models due to a defective contactor switch in the motor that could cause the vehicle to suddenly lose power while driving. The recall covers the 2022-2023 Lucid Air, of which 237 have been identified as having problems and another 336 require remote software updates to check whether the switch is working properly.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, Lucid Air's motors have electrical switches called contactors that close when the vehicle starts, transfer energy to the drive unit, and turn off when the vehicle stalls. However, in some contactors, the spring force may exceed the magnetic force, causing the switch to turn on accidentally and cut off the power to the motor. This may increase the risk of accidents.

Lucid Motors said it began investigating the issue in May 2022, when a vehicle that had lost power was sent to the service center. Initially, the flaw required a technician to manually observe whether the contactor was open at startup, and then Lucid introduced a software update that could remotely monitor whether the contactor was open in the vehicle. After analyzing the fleet data, Lucid found that the contactor turned on at least 5% of the time in 232 customer vehicles.

At the beginning of this year, Lucid Motors's product safety team determined that vehicles with contactor opening signals at least 5 per cent of the time were at unreasonable safety risks and decided to recall these vehicles and replace contactors. As a solution, Lucid advises car owners to send their vehicles to the service center, where the company will update the software and replace the contactor switch free of charge. The replaced contactor has a stronger magnetic force to prevent problems in the future.

According to CTOnews.com, Lucid Motors has been delivering Lucid Air cars to customers since October 2021 and delivered 4494 vehicles at the end of last year. The company expects to contact the affected owners by email and provide further information by April 21, 2023.

This is the third major recall by Lucid Motors since it was delivered to Lucid Air after it recalled 1117 vehicles because of a faulty dashboard wiring harness.
