The Shanghai Consumer Protection Commission called on Internet service providers to strengthen the construction and management of the "youth model" to provide high-quality age-appropriate content for minors and protect their physical and mental health.

Is it really impossible to use late at night? one of the most important changes between "Adolescent Mode" and normal mode is time use management. 20 App are used by default for 40 minutes a day. After timeout, you need to enter a monitoring password to continue to use. Another 19 App models are set to be unable to use the software from 22:00 to 6 am the next day, while Yingke Live is not available from 22:00 to 7 am the next day.

At 4: 00 in the morning, tests found that most App, in "teenage mode", would pop up unusable prompts on the main interface and could not watch the relevant video content. However, watermelon videos, good-looking videos and other App can still be used normally, and without any hints, cartoons and other videos play normally.

Is the video content really "selected"? Although these App claim to select a batch of high-quality content suitable for minors in the "youth mode", we find that when some platforms turn on the "youth mode", the video content decreases sharply, or even none, and the content is too monotonous and boring.

For example, the second shot, the platform declared that "in order to promote the mental health of young people, the platform will recommend education, knowledge and other content suitable for young people to watch", but when the "youth mode" is turned on, there is no video content at all!

Yingke Live, for example, subdivides six sections such as "art", "documentary", "popular science" and "seedling protection" in youth mode, but two of them have no content, and six have only nine video content.

Mantis shrimp, for example, also claims to have selected a number of educational and knowledge content to be presented on the home page, but 8 of the 10 videos are about food, while there are few videos about humanities science popularization, classroom education, life safety knowledge, and so on. (the software is installed and used for the first time, and there is no personalized recommendation in theory. )

Is the age matching degree of the content pool really high? When a few App turn on the "adolescent mode", they also collect personal information about minors in order to match age-appropriate content to minors of different ages. But in the course of our testing, we found that the age-appropriate age matching of the content was not that high.

For example, Kuaishou, we simulated minors of different ages and found that the video content randomly recommended by the platform on the front page of the selection was similar, and the video recommended to 4-year-olds and 14-year-olds turned out to be the same cartoon?!

In addition, most of the App video content tends to be younger, basically based on cartoons, which is obviously not suitable for teenage middle school students.

The Consumer Protection Commission's point of view: network service providers should bear the corresponding social responsibility, balance social benefits and corporate interests, and make "painstaking efforts" in the "youth model" anti-addiction mechanism and content pool construction, and must not become a mere formality. On the one hand, cooperate with parents to actively guide young people to make rational use of mobile phones and have healthy access to the network; on the other hand, age-specific design should be implemented to provide high-quality age-appropriate education content to participate in and lead the healthy growth of young people.
