CTOnews.com, March 28 (Xinhua)-- according to a previous EU resolution, the sale of cars with internal combustion engines will be banned in the EU after 2035 to meet EU carbon emissions targets. However, after the laws were passed by EU countries and the European Parliament last year, the German Transport Ministry opposed the ban at the last minute this month.

Germany and the European Union have reached a compromise on a proposed ban on internal combustion engine-powered cars from 2035, Reuters reported. Carmakers can continue to sell products that use internal combustion engines, but they must use synthetic fuels.

Germany and Italy, both with large car industries, oppose the EU's initial proposal to phase out internal combustion engine cars from 2035. As part of the compromise, the European Commission agreed to create a new car category specifically for models that can only use synthetic fuels. The next step will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on March 28, local time.

In Europe, cars that use synthetic fuels need to have technology to prevent the use of gasoline or diesel, and once a vehicle uses other fuels, the built-in technology in the vehicle will prevent the vehicle from running. However, there are no details on how automakers will implement these systems.

According to CTOnews.com, synthetic fuel (e-fuel) is an alternative fuel made from captured carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide and hydrogen from renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and nuclear power. This process uses carbon dioxide during combustion and releases about the same amount of carbon dioxide into the air, so the overall carbon footprint is low. Synthetic fuels are an option to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector, especially for long-distance freight, sea and air transport.

However, synthetic fuels have not yet been mass produced. Porsche is investing in improving the technology. During the pilot phase in Chile, Porsche's production base plans to produce 34342 gallons of synthetic fuel a year. The company expects to increase to 145 million gallons a year, but that is still a fraction of the 134.83 billion gallons of fuel used in the United States in 2021.
