AI tools have swept the world, and many business leaders have noticed this trend. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently wrote that "the age of AI has arrived." Tesla CEO Elon Musk commented that Gates 'understanding of AI was very limited and still is.

Since AI research firm OpenAI released its chatbot ChatGPT last November and its recently updated GPT-4, so-called generative AI (AIGC) is rapidly expanding into all fields. Business leaders have mixed reviews of AI products such as ChatGPT. Gates et al. argue that tools like ChatGPT could free up employees 'life time by increasing their productivity. But in Musk's view, AI is "one of the greatest risks to the future of civilization."

On Monday, HorizonVC investor Sandy Kory tweeted a quote from Gates 'article: "I have been in contact with the OpenAI team since 2016...", which revealed that Gates has been closely monitoring the progress of AI technology during this time. In a blog post published last week, Gates predicted how AI would transform jobs, climate change, health care and education. He wrote: "I have been in contact with the OpenAI team since 2016, most recently last September. It is unclear whether Gates attended the 2022 meeting as a part-time consultant to Microsoft. Gates stepped down as Microsoft CEO in 2000 and left Microsoft's board in 2020.

Musk, a former co-founder of OpenAI, was one of several Silicon Valley executives who pledged $1 billion in funding to OpenAI in 2015. But in 2018, Musk left OpenAI's board. Since then, he has been critical of the company, particularly its relationship with Microsoft. Musk said in February that OpenAI was originally founded as an open-source nonprofit organization, but has now become "a Microsoft-controlled, closed-source company seeking to maximize profits."

Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019, a partnership that enabled it to license OpenAI technology. Since then, Microsoft has announced plans for a "multi-year, multi-billion dollar" investment in the company, and even partnered with OpenAI to launch a new version of Bing search engine.

But Gates hasn't always been a staunch supporter of OpenAI. When Microsoft first considered partnering with the company, he reportedly expressed skepticism about the latter's technology. Before the 2019 collaboration, Gates was so focused on analyzing OpenAI's technology that he expressed doubts about AI's ability to understand human speech and put it in a specific context, according to people familiar with the matter.

At the same time, Musk was "angry" that ChatGPT attracted super-high popularity. In early 2018, Sam Altman and other OpenAI co-founders reportedly rejected Musk's offer to run the company alone.

Musk and Gates have a long history. The first time the two billionaires disagreed was in 2020, when they disagreed on the severity of the new crown pneumonia epidemic. That same year, after Gates said he decided to buy a Porsche Taycan instead of a Tesla, Musk admitted that his "conversation with Gates was not satisfactory." The Tesla CEO also accused Gates of shorting Tesla stock and even joked about Gates 'weight.
