Dr Silvia Vignolini, lead researcher of the project, said: "to make the environment cooler, you need to reflect a lot of sunlight and do not attract the energy that converts light into heat. According to our survey, only a very small number of materials have this property, and adding color will destroy the cooling effect."

Vignolini layers colored CNC materials with white materials made of ethyl cellulose to produce colored double-layer PDRC films. Their films are bright blue, green and red, and when placed in the sun, the average temperature of these films is nearly 40 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the surrounding air.
