CTOnews.com March 27, artificial intelligence is currently one of the hottest topics, especially ChatGPT, but what happens when the most cutting-edge technology encounters antique computers? Recently, a developer named yeokm1 built a ChatGPT client for MS-DOS on an IBM 5155 laptop in 1984.
Yeokm1 developed a Slack client that can run on Win3.1 systems three and a half years ago. This time, he tried to develop applications that support running ChatGPT on older platforms.
The MS-DOS system itself does not support the network function, and the processing power of the system is very weak. He developed and tested it on the IBM 5155 laptop in 1984, which was configured as follows:
One of his challenges is to find the right DOS network API. He used a ChatGPT-for-DOS application written in a Visual Studio Code text editor (tested on a virtual machine running DOS 6.22) to parse the JSON data output from OpenAI's Chat Completion API.
After solving the network problem, yeokm1 successfully communicated with ChatGPT on this antique computer. It's worth mentioning that yeokm1 said he didn't ask ChatGPT to help write the application.
