In the past decade, innovations in wireless communications and the renaissance of artificial intelligence have revolutionized human society. The intersection and collision of these two emerging forces has promoted the step-by-step evolution of mobile communication systems, from "People's Connection" at the beginning to "Internet of Things" and then to "Intelligent Connection of Everything." Edge computing and edge intelligence come one after another to provide solutions for "intelligent connection of everything," which are regarded as two key technologies for realizing the next generation mobile communication system by academia and industry.

In a cloud computing system, terminal devices are connected to the cloud through various networks such as a radio access network (RAN), a backhaul network, and the Internet. Uploading the data of the terminal device to the cloud will cause a long propagation delay, which is difficult to meet the millisecond delay requirements of 5G.

Driven by the IoT and 5G vision, a new computing paradigm-edge computing has emerged. By providing IT services and cloud computing capabilities to users at the edge of the network, edge computing technologies can effectively reduce network operation and service delivery latency and provide a better user experience. Edge computing is regarded as a key enabling technology to realize the convergence of 5G communication and computing, and has been incorporated into 3GPP.

Edge computing systems consist of end devices (e.g., end users, clients, service subscribers, etc.) and edge servers, which are small data centers deployed by telecom operators on wireless access points. The terminal equipment and the edge server are located in the same RAN and exchange information through wireless links. At the same time, edge servers are connected to large data centers located in the cloud through gateways and backbones.

Edge computing system consists of three technologies: Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), Information Centric Networking (ICN) and Software Defined Networks (SDN). Edge computing can be deployed on virtualization platforms.

NFV creates multiple virtual machines to handle multiple services or perform multiple network functions simultaneously, providing resilient computing services for multiple end devices.

ICN provides an end-to-end service identification model that transforms host-centric to information-centric, enabling content-aware computing.

SDN abstracts network resources onto a virtualized platform, where network administrators plan to build scalable and dynamic computing environments.

The end-to-end delay is composed of three main components: propagation delay, transmission delay and computation delay. Edge computing technology can provide computing services for terminal devices at the edge of RAN, and business data does not need to cross the gateway and backbone network, thus greatly improving the response speed of the system.

Edge Computing Cloud Computing Comparison Results The transmission distance of data is usually less than 1 km. The distance between the end user and the cloud center network server can be tens of kilometers or even hundreds of kilometers across continents. The propagation delay of ocean edge computing is much less than the transmission delay of cloud computing. The communication range of tasks is limited at the edge of the network. Uploading tasks from terminal devices to cloud center networks requires crossing multiple network levels. Traffic control, routing data forwarding, and other network management operations will result in larger transmission delays. Edge computing has smaller transmission delays than cloud computing. The service range is small, the total terminal has less service range, and the total terminal has more computing resources obtained by a single user. The difference between the two is almost higher. Compared with cloud computing, edge computing systems can better protect user privacy and provide more secure services.

Cloud computing platform manages all users 'information through remote public large data center. Due to the high concentration of information resources, it is easy to cause large-scale data leakage and loss when attacked. Edge computing technology realizes the distributed processing and storage of data, avoids the high concentration of information, and reduces the possibility of hacker attacks. In edge servers deployed exclusively by enterprises, enterprise administrators can perform data management authorization, access control and classify service requests at different levels, effectively reducing the leakage of private data.

Stronger environment awareness benefits from the proximity of terminal devices and edge servers. Edge computing technology can acquire real-time information (such as behavior, location, and surrounding environment) of perceived users through a small amount of signaling, and provide users with dedicated situational services (such as route planning and product recommendation).

A terminal device with higher efficiency of environment awareness can coordinate computation-intensive services to the edge server for processing, thereby significantly reducing the data transmission energy consumption on the network air interface while reducing the local computing load.
