CTOnews.com, March 23 (Xinhua)-- Apple's streaming service Apple TV + won an Oscar for best picture last year for its independent film "CODA," the first time a streaming service has won the award. However, Apple's original film lineup has not been attractive enough so far.

According to people familiar with Apple's plans, Apple plans to invest $1 billion a year in making movies and showing them in cinemas as part of the company's efforts to raise its profile in Hollywood and attract users to its streaming service.

According to Pixabay, Apple is focused on making blockbusters that can be shown in cinemas first, and then log on to the streaming service Apple TV+. So far, Apple TV + original films have been shown on a small scale, mostly in a small number of theaters to meet award-winning qualifications. But Apple hopes to release some films that can be shown in a large number of theaters at least a month before the launch of Apple TV +. Large-scale cinema distribution will help build momentum for the film and promote the Apple TV + service by the way.

Apple has approached studios to release several films in theaters this year and release more in the future, according to the people who spoke on condition of anonymity. These possible films include "the Killer of the Moon" directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, "Agier", a spy thriller directed by Matthew Vaughn, and "Napoleon", a drama directed by Ridley Scott about Napoleon the French conqueror.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

CTOnews.com notes that Apple's plan is similar to that of rival Amazon, which has also announced plans to spend $1 billion a year on cinema movies.
