Epic first launched the MetaHuman authoring tool in 2021 to simplify the process of making more realistic personas. At the 2023 Game developers Conference (GDC), the company unveiled its new animation tool, MetaHuman Animator, in its Unreal World keynote speech, which can create realistic facial animations using only videos shot from iPhone.

Epic gave a live demonstration of the actors in the upcoming game Blade of Hell: Senna's Epic. At the Demo scene, the actress spoke for 10 seconds to the iPhone front camera to match the corresponding facial movements. Only 2 minutes later, Unreal engine 5 accurately reproduced this speech video on the modeling person's face, and all facial details were highly restored, including lips, eyes, facial muscles, light and shadow, etc. The language pronunciation matches perfectly with the details of the action. The process of collecting facial data does not use any device other than iPhone. All rendering modeling processes are presented in the live broadcast, and the whole process is only 2 minutes.

Even more impressive, the developers showed how to apply the same set of voice lines and similar levels of facial animation to multiple different character models. Although it is not like simply cutting and pasting, creating a set of facial animation on one model can be applied directly to another model. However, MetaHuman Animator does greatly simplify the process and allows creators to use similar quality levels for similar facial animation applications on different models.
