Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, March 23 (Xinhua)-- A team of researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) recently invented a water treatment method that can filter perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water.
Picture source: UBCPFAS is also called "permanent chemical" in the industry because it is not easily degraded in the environment and human body. CTOnews.com note: PFAS waterproof and oil-proof, mainly used for non-stick cooking utensils, cosmetics and toilet paper and other products, human intake may have adverse effects on health.
Madjid Mohseni, a professor of chemistry and bioengineering at UBC, explained: "after entering the human body, PFAS cannot be broken down and will continue to accumulate, thus affecting many functions of the body."
The team developed an alternative absorbent for activated carbon, which can capture not only long-chain PFAS but also short chains, so it can basically capture all kinds of PFAS that may exist in water.
At present, the water treatment scheme developed by the team can only absorb PFAS in the water and can not be decomposed later.
