2023 Mid-Season Championship Venue Announced and Competition System Upgrade
The 2023 Mid-Season Championship will be held in London! Thirteen teams from around the world will compete for the title of the mid-season championship. We will also adopt a new competition system to make the competition more intense.
This year's mid-season championship has been expanded from eleven teams to thirteen and will include two double-elimination rounds: the qualifiers and the win-loss sectionals.
There will be eight teams competing in the Final Stage: the second seed teams from LEC, LCS and LPL, and the first seed teams from LLA, CBLOL, PCS, VCS and LJL.
○ In 2023, the LCK Division will serve as the championship area of the Global Finals, and the second seed team will directly enter the win-lose group stage.
The eight teams will be divided into two groups of four teams each. The group played BO3 double elimination matches.
● The two winning teams of the loser group will compete in the final qualification match, and the winner will advance to the win-loss group stage together with the two winning teams of the group, and join the five teams that have already been selected.
● In the win-lose group stage, eight teams will play BO5 double-loss knockout stage. The teams included three teams from the finalists, as well as the No. 1 seed from LEC, LCS, LPL, LCK and the No. 2 seed from LCK.
With the midseason championship, fans can assess the relative strengths of teams and divisions halfway through the season. With the new format, we hope to give fans more time to enjoy the game, while bringing more exciting duels and telling stories between the players.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the 2023 London Midseason Championship!
2023 Global Finals Announcement
We are proud to announce that after five years, the League of Legends Global Finals will be back in Korea! South Korea is a pioneer in the esports industry and home to the defending champion, and we'll be sharing venue and date information with you in the coming months.
The World Finals will also take on a completely new format! Twenty-two teams will be invited to participate in three stages of competition in this year's Global Finals: the Finals, the Swiss Round and the Knockouts. Before we kick off the main event, we'd like to introduce you to a new qualifying event-the Global Finals Promotion Series.
● The Global Finals qualifying series will be played in BO5 format, between LEC fourth seed and LCS fourth seed. The winning team will advance to the global finals. We hope that more divisions and teams will join the Global Finals qualifying series in the future.
● The winning team of the series will travel to South Korea with 21 other teams, eight of which will have to go through the qualifying rounds first. The teams will be determined based on their previous international performances in each division.
○ The eight teams starting from the qualifying stage are:
■ Top two of VCS and PCS
■ First place in LLA, CBLOL, LJL, and winner of Global Finals qualifying series
Fourteen teams from the Swiss Round stage are:
■ Top 4 of LPL and LCK
■ Top three LEC and LCS
● The finalists are divided into two groups, with four teams in each group playing a double-elimination match, with the two winning teams advancing to the Swiss round. Each group will start with a BO3 double-elimination match, where the winner of one group will face the loser of the other group for a BO5 match, and the winner will advance to the Swiss round.
● The Swiss Round begins, and the two winning teams from the finalists will join the other fourteen teams.
● The Swiss round stage will adopt a five-round Swiss round system, in which teams with the same winning and losing records will compete with each other until they reach three wins or three losses.
● At the beginning of this stage, each team will be randomly matched with another team from a different division. Two teams play a BO1 duel.
● In the second round, teams will regroup in pairs with teams with the same record (e.g., 1-0 teams will face other 1-0 teams). After a total of five rounds of regrouping, teams with three wins will advance to the knockout stage, while teams with three losses will be eliminated. All competitions where teams may advance or be eliminated will be BO3, and the rest will be BO1.
● In the knockout stage, the eight teams advancing from the Swiss round will be drawn according to their rankings in the previous stage, followed by a single-loss knockout in half zones. The two semi-districts will go through the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finally the championship and runner-up finals, resulting in the 2023 global championship.
In the Global Finals, our focus is on organizing more than BO1 competitions and increasing the chances of cross-division competitions. At the same time, we also want to make sure that every game in the Global Finals is important and minimize the impact on subsequent schedules. The introduction of multiple elimination rounds in the Finals and Swiss rounds allows teams with poor early performances to have a chance to turn over, while allowing players to see more matches of their favorite players. In the knockout stages, we adopted the BO5 single elimination system, giving teams a chance to prove who is the best of the best-no second chances, no breathing room, one final decision
