CTOnews.com March 22 news, developer Asahi Lina recently released a monthly report introducing the latest progress of the Asahi Linux project in March this year.

The report mentions the use of the Rust language, including DRM kernel drivers, AGX Gallium3D Mesa OpenGL drivers and Vulkan drivers, and so on.

The monthly report said that reverse engineering of open source drivers is still under way to facilitate the use of graphics resources for Apple Silicon M1 / M2 chips on the Linux platform.

The kernel driver is still in out-of-tree state and will continue to send Snapshot versions to users. DRM abstractions (abstractions) written in Rust are beginning to mature, and kernel drivers will continue to develop new features around Vulkan.

The performance of the Mesa driver has been significantly improved because it no longer serializes GPU and CPU work. Xonotic (a cross-platform open source first-person shooter) can run faster than 800FPS, while the same hardware (M2 MacBook Air) runs macOS at only 600 FPS. This proves that the open source reverse engineering GPU driver does have the ability to beat Apple drivers in real situations!

Not only that, our driver also passed 100% dEQP-GLES2 and dEQP-EGL conformance tests, and OpenGL conformance is better than this version of macOS.

But we certainly won't stop there, thanks to Alyssa's tireless efforts, full support for GLES 3.0 and 3.1 is well under way!
