CTOnews.com March 22 news, Samsung Electronics semiconductor business has undergone major adjustments in recent years. Samsung Electronics has focused on the development of storage semiconductor business for the past few decades.

However, with the continued downturn of the storage semiconductor industry, Samsung Electronics is actively adjusting the company's development strategy, and the contract manufacturing business (foundry business) has become a new driving force for the development of the company's semiconductor business.

According to the foreign technology media Business Korea, citing a report released by TrendForce on March 19, Samsung's contract manufacturing business had revenue of 7.0164 trillion won in the fourth quarter of 2022 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 36.976 billion yuan).

The report also points out that DRAM business revenue is 7.2103 trillion won (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 37.998 billion yuan), the difference between the two is only 200 billion won (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 1.054 billion yuan). This is the first time that the contract manufacturing business is on a par with the DRAM business.

CTOnews.com learned from the report that Samsung's NAND business had revenue of 5.6094 trillion won in the third quarter of last year (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 29.562 billion yuan) and 4.5571 trillion won in the fourth quarter (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 24.016 billion yuan). The gap between contract manufacturing and NAND business is widening.

DRAM and NAND flash memory were previously thought to be the two carriages driving Samsung's growth, accounting for 50 and 30 per cent of the market, respectively.

Industry insiders speculate that Samsung's contract manufacturing business is expected to surpass DRAM in 2023. Samsung Electronics expects annual DRAM sales of between $17 billion and $18 billion in 2023, according to market research firm Omdia.
