OpenJDK Java 20 introduces a scope value as the incubation API. The scope value of Java allows immutable data to be shared within and between threads and takes precedence over thread local variables. Java scope values are designed to be easy to use, easy to understand, enhanced reliability, and high performance.

Scope value is a new language structure that allows you to declare a variable that can only be accessed within the current scope (extent). A scope is a code block or a method call stack, which can contain multiple threads. Scope values can only be read by code in the current scope and cannot be read or modified by code in other scope. Therefore, scope values are immutable and can be safely shared between threads.

Java 20 also made a fourth incubation update to Vector API to compile to the best vector instructions on supported CPU schemas at run time. Compared with JDK 19, the Vector API of Java 20 remains unchanged, except that some bug Bug has been fixed and performance has been improved.

The second preview form of Java / JDK 20 is the virtual threading function, which acts as a lightweight thread for high-throughput concurrent applications. Virtual threads on JDK 19 have some small API changes and other basic improvements to this preview feature.

The new version also updates the record mode, pattern matching of switch statements, external functions and memory API, and structured concurrency of JDK / Java 20.

Oracle now provides JDK 20 for developers, end users, and enterprises. Oracle JDK 20 is not a long-term supported (LTS) version, so it will be replaced by JDK 21 in six months.

Oracle JDK 17 (released on September 14, 2021) is the latest version of Java LTS. Oracle announced plans to reduce the time between LTS versions from three to two years, so JDK 21 (September 2023) plans to be the next LTS version.
