Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
On Tuesday, March 22, local time, Google began testing its own artificial intelligence chat robot Bard among British and American users.
"as more and more people start using Bard and testing features, they will surprise us and are bound to make mistakes," Sundar Pichai, the company's chief executive, said in an email sent to all employees that day. "but user feedback is critical to improving the product and the underlying technology."
Google launched a beta version of Bard based on the large language model LaMDA on Tuesday morning, which can provide answers to a variety of questions. Shares in Alphabet, Google's parent company, rose nearly 4 per cent in intraday trading after the news.
But Google warned that Bard could make mistakes or "give an inaccurate or inappropriate response".
In recent months, due to the rapid development of Microsoft-supported artificial intelligence technologies such as OpenAI and ChatGPT, Google wants to keep up with the fast pace of artificial intelligence by releasing Bard.
When Google first announced the launch of Bard this year, many employees and investors thought the company was in a bit of a hurry in response to Microsoft's move to integrate ChatGPT. At a recent staff meeting, employees were most concerned about the purpose of releasing Bard, which some people were confused about. Google executives at the meeting argued that Bard was just an experiment to distinguish artificial intelligence chatbots from core search products.
Last month, Pichai called on all Google employees to participate in testing the Bard project, asking employees to rewrite the wrong answers generated by chatbots. On Tuesday, Pichai said in an email that more than 80,000 Google employees were involved in testing Bard.
Pichai also said in an email on Tuesday that the company was responsible for Bard testing and invited 10,000 trusted testers "from different fields and with different views" to participate in the Bard project.
Google employees "should be proud of the work and the technological breakthroughs that led us to where we are now over the years, including our Transformer research in 2017 and basic models such as PalM and BERT," Pichai said. "even with these developments, we are still in the early stages of a long journey of artificial intelligence," he added. "
"now I'm happy to see how Bard can inspire creativity and curiosity," Pichai said. He added that he looked forward to sharing "a series of advances in artificial intelligence" at Google's annual developer conference in May.
The full text of the memo sent by Pichai is as follows:
"Google employees:
Last week was an important week for artificial intelligence, and we released a series of announcements about the introduction of artificial intelligence to Google Cloud Cloud, developer platform Developer, and collaboration tool Workspace. There will be more news this week as we begin to gradually open up access to Bard, which was first announced in February.
From today, users in the United States and the United Kingdom can register through bard.google.com. This is only the first step. As time goes by, we will continue to open Bard to more countries and regions.
I am very grateful to the Bard team. In the past few weeks, they have probably spent more time on Bard than anyone else; and thanks to the 80,000 Google employees who helped test Bard, we should be proud of the work and the technological breakthroughs that have led us over the years, including our 2017 Transformer research and basic models such as PalM and BERT.
Even with these advances, we are still in the early stages of a long journey of artificial intelligence. As more and more people start to use Bard and test functionality, they will surprise us and are bound to make mistakes. But user feedback is critical to improving the product and underlying technology.
We have adopted a responsible development approach and invited 10,000 trusted testers from different fields with different views. We still welcome all kinds of feedback, and we will learn from it and improve it iteratively.
Now, I'm happy to see how Bard can inspire creativity and curiosity. I look forward to sharing with you a series of advances in the field of artificial intelligence at the developer conference in May to help people, businesses and communities. "
