The company recently added generative AI to almost all services, while access to Bard chatbots is still exclusive to a small number of people. CTOnews.com noted that yesterday some Pixel users received an invitation to test Google Bard, and today the company officially "started to open access to Bard", and users from the United States and the United Kingdom can be added to the shortlist.

Sissie Hsiao, vice president of products, and Eli Collins, vice president of research, invited everyone to add to the waiting list on bard.google.com in a blog post entitled "Bard helps us write". The company said it would provide access to users in the US and UK from today and "will expand to more countries and languages over time". Google said opening up more user access was "the next key step in improving it" and noted that it was important to get feedback from a wider range of testers.

Just like ChatGPT or Microsoft's Bing chat, users can talk to Bard in natural language as if they were talking to friends. "you can ask Bard to give you some tips to achieve your goal of reading more books this year, explain quantum physics in simple terms, or stimulate your creativity by summarizing blog posts," Hsiao and Collins wrote.

The two also said, "Bard is a LLM (large language model), and we think it is a complementary experience for Google search." According to the screenshots included in the announcement, the interface of Bard looks quite similar to that of Bing AI, but there are several key differences. Below each answer, Bard provides four buttons: like, tap, refresh, and a "Google it" button. Bing AI does not have these functions, but instead uses the space below the answer as the source reference area.

Bing AI runs on OpenAI's GPT-4, while Bard, which is based on Google's "lightweight and optimized version" of LaMDA, says it "will update stronger and more capable models over time".

There are also several differences in the input field at the bottom of the screen. Bard has a microphone symbol at the end, indicating that voice-to-text may be supported, while Bing does not. At the same time, Microsoft provides a broom icon to open a new theme on the left side of the text input field, which Google does not have. It is worth noting that "Bard may display inaccurate or offensive information that does not represent Google's point of view," wrote in the small words at the bottom of Bard's reply. "

Google said it was important to be aware of such challenges, noting that quality and safety were major issues to consider. But it is not clear what the limit on the number of conversations is.

Despite all the potential limitations and errors, Google believes Bard is worth the effort, adding that it will "continue to improve Bard and add features, including programming, more languages, and multimodal experiences."
