In this assessment, OpenAI studied more than 1000 occupations in the United States and quantified the tasks needed to complete them. The researchers then used manual annotators and GPT-4 models to rate whether systems supported by ChatGPT reduced the time required for humans to perform specific tasks by at least 50 per cent.

The researchers acknowledge that the study's attempt to summarize each occupation by simply quantifying work tasks is inherently flawed. The study added: "it is not clear to what extent occupations can be completely broken down into different tasks, or whether this approach systematically ignores some of the skills needed to be competent for these jobs."

Another problem is that GPT's demonstrations have shown that this technology can make obvious mistakes, including fabricating information, which makes it necessary for humans to strengthen supervision.
