CTOnews.com March 21 news, foreign science and technology media 9to5Mac recently took inventory on the OLED panel of MacBook notebook product line related information. The report points out that the first product with OLED panels is the MacBook Air, and Apple is expected to launch it in 2024.

Why did Apple choose OLED?

Apple's MacBook product line currently uses LCD and mini-LED panel materials. The MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro use LCD screens; 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro use mini-LED screens.

Mini-LED is comparable to or even better than OLED panels in some respects, but not as good as OLED in key indicators such as black depth. Apple plans to change the material of the iPad Pro panel from mini-LED to OLED next year, while the MacBook is slightly different.

The first MacBook device with OLED panel

Rose Young, chief executive of DSCC, a screen supply chain consultancy, said the first MacBook to switch to an OLED display would be the MacBook Air, while MacBook Pro would continue to use the mini-LED panel for the next few years.

Ross Young said Apple plans to launch new MacBook Air 13-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch and 12.9-inch models with OLED displays in 2024.

Ross Young did not share additional details, but he said earlier this year that all three devices will have "two" OLED displays and two red, green and blue emitting layers to increase brightness and reduce power consumption. Ross Young has previously said that the three devices will also support ProMotion, with refresh rates up to 120Hz.

Guo Mingyi, another senior analyst, also said that Samsung display (Samsung Display,SDC) plans to significantly increase shipments of OLED panels of laptops in 2023, with a goal of increasing YoY (year-on-year) to 6-7 million units by 2023.

Guo Mingyi explained why Apple chose MacBook Air over MacBook Pro. CTOnews.com previously reported that Guo Mingyi said: "laptops using OLED have the advantage of being thinner and lighter than mini-LED, and offer a wider variety of shape design options."

Frivolity is far more important to MacBook Air than to MacBook Pro. This allows Apple to focus on upgrading MacBook Air's display technology before choosing to upgrade MacBook Pro.

The report also said that Apple will adopt the OLED panel technology of "tandem stack". This technology can extend the life of the display, improve power efficiency and increase brightness.
