CTOnews.com, March 20 (Xinhua)-- Microsoft's speech recognition subsidiary Nuance Communications today released an AI clinical note-taking software called Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Express, which is aimed at health care workers.

DAX Express is designed to help reduce the administrative burden on clinical care by automatically generating draft clinical notes within seconds of a patient's visit. The software is developed by ambient A.I. Co-driven with OpenAI's GPT-4.

Diana Nole, executive vice president of Nuance's medical division, said the company wanted doctors to "regain the fun of medicine" so that they could take care of more patients. "our ultimate goal is to reduce this cognitive burden and reduce the time they actually have to spend on these management tasks," she says. "

Microsoft acquired Nuance in 2021 for about $16 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 110.24 billion yuan). The company makes money by selling tools that identify and transcribe voice in scenarios such as doctor's office visits, customer service calls and voicemail, and DAX Express complements other existing services that Nuance already offers on the market.

Nole said the technology will be implemented through Nuance's Dragon Medical One speech recognition app, which has been used by more than 550000 doctors. Dragon Medical One is a cloud-based workflow assistant that doctors can use their voice to operate, enabling them to view clinical systems and quickly access patient information, and clinical notes generated by DAX Express will appear on the Dragon Medical One desktop.

DAX Express is also based on the original DAX application launched by Nuance in 2020. DAX converts oral patient visits into clinical records and sends them through a manual review process to ensure their accuracy and high quality. These notes will appear in the medical record within four hours of the appointment. By contrast, DAX Express can generate clinical records in seconds so that doctors can immediately view automatic summaries of patients' visits.

Nuance did not provide specific information on the price of these applications, saying the price of Nuance technology varies depending on the number of users and the size of a particular health care system. DAX Express will initially be available as a private preview this summer. Nole said Nuance doesn't know when the technology will be more widely used because it will depend on the feedback the company receives from its first users.

Patient information is particularly sensitive and is regulated by HIPAA and other laws. Alysa Taylor, vice president of Microsoft Azure Group, said DAX Express adheres to the core principles of Microsoft's responsible artificial intelligence framework and guides all A.I. Investment companies, as well as the additional security measures that Nuance has taken. Nuance has a strict data protocol with its customers, which is fully encrypted and runs in a HIPAA-compliant environment.
