Beijing, March 20 (Xinhua) in addition to short video app TikTok, Byte Jump also has a little-known but popular sister app in the United States: CapCut.

Note: video editing app CapCutCapCut, a video editing tool that helps people quickly create online videos and emojis, has been downloaded more than TikTok in recent weeks, which is under intense scrutiny in the United States because of user data problems. CapCut allows people to easily edit videos using a variety of templates, filters, visual effects, and music.

Users say CapCut can help them make videos that look more professional, and such videos are more likely to go viral on Meta's Instagram and Google's YouTube.

CapCut was launched in 2020, seizing the opportunity of the wave of short videos. CapCut currently has more than 200 million monthly active users, according to data from Shanghai Mobile's application analysis platform. By comparison, TikTok has more than 1 billion users worldwide.

CapCut soared to the top of the app store rankings at the end of last year and hovered near the top of the weekly app downloads rankings in the US, according to app trackers such as Sensor Tower. In addition, there is also a wave of other Chinese apps that dominate the US app rankings, including TikTok, cross-border shopping platforms Temu and Shein.

According to Sensor Tower, CapCut's global downloads increased by 43% last year, to more than 400 million. Since last year, about 7 per cent of CapCut's global downloads have come from the US.

CapCut says in its privacy policy that in order to provide services, it collects content such as photos and videos uploaded by users, as well as data such as users' location, gender and birthday, which is common in video editing tools. CapCut says it stores the data in the US and Singapore, just like TikTok. The app declined to comment further.
