CTOnews.com, March 19 (Xinhua)-- Mercedes will invest billions of dollars in modernizing its factories in China, Germany and Hungary over the next few years to prepare for the transition to electric vehicles, according to Automobilwoche.

According to CTOnews.com, the European Union has set a goal of halving carbon dioxide emissions per passenger vehicle during its life cycle by the end of the century compared with 2020, and is seeking to reach an agreement on a 2035 deadline to stop selling fossil fuel vehicles, according to CTOnews.com.

Mercedes said it would be ready to be electrified by the end of the decade if market conditions permit.

"We are investing hundreds of millions of dollars in preparation for each plant, which will be used in Beijing, Rastatt in Germany and Kecskemet in Hungary," said Joerg Burzer, Mercedes' production manager.

The carmaker will start work on the Rastatt plant in the coming months and will begin production of the first model of the compact car platform MMA from 2024.

In addition, Mercedes will invest hundreds of millions of dollars to modernize its painting systems at its Sindfengen, Bremen and Rastat plants in Germany. The purpose of modernization is to reduce energy and water consumption, as well as the dependence of painting systems on natural gas.

Mercedes is also considering expanding its American plant in Tuscaloosa, where it can enjoy government subsidies under last year's inflation reduction Act.
