CTOnews.com, March 19 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- earlier this week, Amazon announced the launch of its third generation Linux distribution, Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023). Amazon says the release will bring high security standards, predictable lifecycles and deterministic updates.

Amazon Linux 2023 is optimized for Amazon EC2, deeply integrated with the latest AWS features, and provides an integrated experience with many AWS-specific tools.

On the security side, Amazon says Amazon Linux 2023 comes with pre-configured security policies that help users set up their systems to meet a variety of common industry guidelines. Amazon Linux 2023 also comes with a hardened Linux kernel by default to increase security.

In terms of lifecycle support, Amazon will release a new major version of Amazon Linux every two years, including major changes to the kernel, tool chain, GLib C, OpenSSL, and other system libraries and utilities. In addition, security updates will be available when they are ready, and there will be quarterly updates, including security updates, bug fixes, and new features and packages. These quarterly updates will update things such as the language runtime and popular software packages.

Each version of Amazon Linux will be supported for five years, but after the first two years and subsequent releases, one version will enter the maintenance phase and will only receive security bug fixes and patches. It is ideal for users who do not want to upgrade the operating system all the time.

CTOnews.com comes with an Amazon Linux lifecycle diagram, and Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023) will support it until March 15, 2028.

Explaining deterministic updates, Amazon said: "Amazon Linux provides you with deterministic updates through a versioned repository, which is a flexible and consistent update mechanism. Distribution is locked to a specific version of the Amazon Linux package repository, allowing you to control how and when updates are obtained. By default, the dnf update command does not update the package you installed compared to Amazon Linux 2 (dnf is the successor to yum). This helps ensure that the same version of the package is used in the task. "

Amazon Linux 2023 is available free of charge. Standard Amazon EC2 and AWS rates apply to running Amazon EC2 instances and other services.
