CTOnews.com, March 19, in response to rumors that Audi is planning to reform its model naming rules, Audi brand CEO Markus Duesmann confirmed the news in an interview with German media, saying that Audi will use odd numbers on fuel and plug-in hybrid models and even numbers on pure electric models in the future.

The shift began with a mid-term update of E-Tron last year and renaming it Q8 E-Tron, says Mr Duthman. This means that the current gasoline version of Q8 SUV may be renamed Q9 after a mid-term update later this year. At the same time, he also confirmed that the new Audi A4 will be renamed Audi A5, and the new Audi A6 will be renamed Audi A7. However, Duthman declined to say how the existing Audi A5 and Audi A7 coupe will be named in the future.

Eventually, as Audi expects to sell only pure electric vehicles around 2033, its electric vehicles will also use odd numbers in their names. Audi has confirmed that its last car with an internal combustion engine will be launched in 2026.

CTOnews.com noted that unlike Mercedes-Benz's plan to abandon the EQ brand, Duthman made it clear that Audi would not give up the suffix naming of E-Tron.

Mr Duthman said Audi plans to launch no less than 20 new models over the next two years, half of which are pure electric models. Dusman also confirmed Audi's plans to launch an electric car that is lower than the current Q4 E-Tron, although it is not clear whether he is referring to the A4 E-Tron or the smaller A2 E-Tron.
